Exclusive: Gudea Secures $7M to Forecast Viral Online Narratives

Minneapolis-based startup Gudea has secured $7 million in seed funding to help organizations forecast which online narratives are set to go viral and identify the actors behind them, according to exclusive information shared with Crunchbase News.

Co-founder and CEO Keith Presley stated that Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures co-led the financing round. This latest investment lifts the company’s total capital raised to roughly $15 million following its establishment in 2023.

The firm reports a 357% year-over-year increase in revenue. Its client roster features major artificial intelligence firms along with enterprises in the retail, entertainment, and telecommunications sectors, though these clients remain unnamed due to the confidential nature of the company’s operations.

Traditional metrics like tracking mentions and hashtags provide only a partial perspective, according to Gudea. Instead, the firm seeks to map the flow of information across various individuals, networks, and digital platforms to forecast how far a narrative will travel, when it will accelerate, and when it will dissipate.

Presley characterizes Gudea as a “storm tracker for the internet.”

“As a meteorologist uses patterns to predict the weather, we’re using patterns to predict information,” he stated in an interview, noting that the enterprise monitors more than 600 social media platforms.

The enterprise originated from the George Washington Initiative, a nonprofit organization that applied methodologies originally developed by the intelligence community to counter online Al Qaeda and ISIS networks toward domestic information campaigns. Initially, the founders sought existing software capable of tracking information flows, but determined current social listening tools were inadequate.

CTO and co-founder James Thomin initiated development on technology designed to chart those pathways. A critical turning point occurred when the team analyzed the backlash surrounding a marketing campaign featuring actor Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light. Presley pointed out that critics of the campaign utilized the exact information routes previously used to spread COVID-related disinformation.

The leadership team recognized “that these patterns were repeating, and that there was a much broader use case,” Presley remembered.

This technology officially spun out into an independent business in 2023. Initially, its commercial strategy concentrated on reputational risk management, assisting major corporations in identifying potentially high-impact stories before they achieve widespread distribution.

“We don’t need to know what we’re looking for to find it, so we can find all of those good or bad narratives before you know what keywords you should be searching for,” Presley explained.

Who’s driving the conversation?

Gudea functions in part by evaluating whether unusual behaviors from specific accounts or users are fueling digital conversations. Additionally, it investigates how narratives migrate from niche online communities to mainstream platforms.

As an illustration, the company executed an analysis surrounding online claims that linked Taylor Swift to Nazism during an album release. 1 Georgia Paul, director of client experience at Gudea, informed Crunchbase News that the investigation revealed deliberate manipulation of the narrative.

Furthermore, the organization’s work has addressed instances involving stock market manipulation and corporate espionage. More recently, it has evaluated how discussions regarding data centers impact businesses within the energy and AI sectors. Paul noted that the technology is also capable of highlighting positive trends that companies can leverage, alongside identifying reputational vulnerabilities.

Predicting what spreads next

To evaluate behavior, Gudea applies deep learning methods—specifically graph neural networks—and utilizes large language models to generate concise summaries of its findings.

“Those behavior patterns are like fingerprints, and so our AI then recognizes those fingerprints, pulls it out, and then we use an LLM to summarize,” said Presley.

The startup distributes its software via subscription options that incorporate automated reports, platform access, and direct alerts. The automated report format was developed specifically for executive teams who typically do not interact with software platforms directly.

Presley identified Alethea, Cyabra, and Blackbird as competitors within the narrative intelligence space, while distinguishing Gudea by its predictive capabilities.

Gudea provides clients with metrics detailing “how long till it goes viral, how many people will be impacted, and how long till it goes away,” he stated.

The company’s overarching mission remains tied to its nonprofit heritage: increasing transparency around the mechanics governing online information.

“People are making real-world decisions off of what they see online, and not all of that information is authentic,” Presley remarked.

With its newly acquired funds, the startup intends to scale its workforce, build out additional features, and extend its monitoring across new regions, languages, and platforms. Currently, Gudea supports 39 customers and employs roughly 25 individuals.

Mudita Venture Partners investor Buddy Foster emphasized that artificial intelligence is transforming how narratives gain traction online.

“Damage to a brand is now starting in the fringe parts of the internet and builds momentum before it ever reaches a headline. It’s a big problem,” Foster stated via email. “Gudea has built a solution that has the potential to own the market and know more than just the headlines. They can really see what is coming before it’s a problem.”

In Foster’s perspective, alternative market solutions remain largely “reactive and surface-layer,” whereas Gudea adopts a proactive approach.

“Gudea models how information moves across the internet and hundreds of platforms, so it can spot a problem before anyone knows to search for it,” he concluded. “Since it looks at behavior instead of content, its ability to be proactive gets better even as the internet gets more clouded.”
